Workshop “Sludge Drying for P-Recycling” & Demonstration Event Dryer-Grinder

Apr 9, 2025

On April 9, 2025, an inspiring FlashPhos workshop took place at the University of Stuttgart. Concluding with an expert panel, it did not only include interesting presentations, but also fruitful discussions and insights from industry and policy. However, the highlight of the day was a site visit to the FlashPhos Pilot Dryer-Grinder.

The day started off with some interesting presentations about various aspects of the project:

  • The vision of FlashPhos (Matthias Rapf, University of Stuttgart)
  • Cutting-edge drying technologies (Steffen Ritterbusch PhD, eng4e)
  • Thin film dryer solutions (Florian Drunsel, Buss-SMS-Canzler GmbH)
  • Practical operating experiences in sludge drying (Jonathan Fuchs, ZVK-Steinhäule)
  • Operational results from pilot dryer-grinder (Ayumi Schober, University of Stuttgart)

After the presentations, attendees got the chance to see the Pilot Dryer-Grinder. The tour was led by Ayumi Schober, who gave insights in engineering, operation and challenges of the plant.

“We were delighted to welcome all attendees at our site to show them the FlashPhos Dryer-Grinder. It was a pleasure to present the project and the plant not only to the project partners but also to external visitors and interested stakeholders.”

– Ayumi Schober, researcher at the University of Stuttgart

After the lunch break, the workshop concluded with an an open discussion, which was enriched by a diverse panel of experts from the fields of sewage sludge production, sludge drying, bioeconomy and phosphorus recovery.  The audience joined the discussion with equal expertise and energy, turning the session into a true co-creation of ideas.

“Special thanks to our panelists for steering such a dynamic exchange – and to our audience contributors who brought essential perspectives to the table. The insights were exactly what this dialogue needed. This kind of interdisciplinary and cross-sector exchange is crucial to move innovation forward and shape sustainable solutions at scale!

– Matthias Rapf, FlashPhos Project Coordinator, University of Stuttgart
