SMS is number 1 in thin film evaporation technology and a global leader in drying and high viscosity technology. SMS develops and constructs plants and equipment for evaporation and drying processes and processing of highly viscous materials. The company serves customers of the chemical, waste management, food and pharmaceutical industry.
SMS combines process know how with know how in manufacturing of process equipment and has profound knowledge in plant engineering as well as project management. Over 200 highly qualified and experienced experts are working at SMS’ main site in Butzbach, Germany, and the company’s branches in Düren, Erlangen and Pratteln, Switzerland, to apply SMS’ vision of excellence in their work for and with SMS’ customers. To meet customers’ specific requirements, SMS operates a testing and development facility with 20 different pilot units in Pratteln. Manufacturing, mechanical engineering, procurement and quality assurance are located in SMS’ headquarters in Butzbach. Marketing and sales as well as process engineering are situated in SMS’ main office and in the branch offices in Düren and Pratteln. In the Erlangen office, specialists are providing computer simulations for the core technologies of the company.
Relevant for the FlashPhos project is SMS’ comprehensive experience in operating pilot plants and the knowledge in the field of sewage sludge drying – a technology which has been a core activity for more than 30 years with more than 150 units sold. In 2018, SMS won the biggest contract in the company’s history – 20 dryers for sewage sludge drying to be installed in Shanghai, China.

Role in the Project

SMS carries out pre-tests on its pilot plant dryer in order to pre-define the requirements for the FlashPhos pilot plant and to determine operating parameters to meet the demands of FlashPhos (low residual moisture content, small particles). SMS also defines the plant set-up and details of the dryer design as well as peripheral equipment and constructs the pilot dryer. From this pilot dryer, fine and dry sewage sludge will be delivered for pilot plant tests of the FlashPhos process. Besides installing the dryer-grinder in an operational environment, SMS renders maintenance support and dryer/plant modifications if required.
In addition, SMS is involved in analytics for the characterisation of properties of the sludge used in the tests. Furthermore, SMS will support exploitation activities as a plant supplier.
