The Graz University of Technology (TU GRAZ) participates in FlashPhos with the “Thermal Energy Systems and Biomass” group of the Institute of Thermal Engineering (IWT). The group has extensive experience in experimental and numerical research on the thermal characterisation of industrial furnaces and thermal conversion of biomass as well as fossil fuels. Research focus of the IWT is primarily combustion, gasification and pyrolysis, as well as the development of innovative waste heat recovery systems and the optimisation of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC). The group has achieved a leading position in multi-scale descriptions of thermo-chemical processes, including the molecular, particle and reactor level, employing detailed reactions schemes and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. It works in close cooperation with leading developers and manufacturers of steel-based technology, glass-based technology, of industrial furnaces, and of biomass combustion, gasification and pyrolysis plants. It is closely cooperating as a key partner with the Austrian bioenergy competence centre BIOENERGY 2020+.

Role in the Project

TU Graz leads the development of CFD simulation model for the burner, reactor and refiner for the cold model and the industrial-scale pilot plant. It conducts validation of the CFD simulation model for the cold model through experimental testing, technical evaluation of the burner and reactor designs as well as parameter optimisation of the pilot plant based on CFD simulations methods. TU Graz is also involved in the assessment of hazardous side products based on experimental testing in the cold model and will disseminate the FlashPhos process in scientific and public journals and conferences.
