“Implementation of the Sewage Sludge Ordinance in NRW – Phosphorus Recovery in the Circular Economy”

The amended Sewage Sludge Ordinance provides for a nationwide obligation to recover phosphorus from municipal sewage sludge or its ashes from 2029. The project “The implementation of the requirements of the Sewage Sludge Ordinance for phosphorus recovery in North Rhine-Westphalia” was carried out on behalf of the NRW Ministry of the Environment from the end of 2018 to the end of 2020. In addition to the preparation of fact sheets for phosphorus recovery processes, scenarios for future sewage sludge disposal in NRW were developed. Based on the available information, it was possible to estimate that in the future sewage sludge will mainly be pretreated thermally first and then the ash will be fed to a phosphorus recovery process.

The virtual regional dialogue took place on August 11 at 3:00 pm. Not only options, capacities and locations for sewage sludge treatment and phosphorus recovery were discussed, but also the EU project FlashPhos was presented.
